Image Upscaler: practical notes
What 2x super-resolution actually does
ESRGAN is a neural model, not a browser zoom: it hallucinates plausible edge and texture detail to fill the doubled grid, so a 600x400 image becomes 1200x800. Output is PNG (lossless), so the file is usually larger than your JPEG input even before the pixel count quadruples. Everything runs on your GPU via WebGL, in this tab; nothing is uploaded.
What it can and can't recover
It does best on soft edges in illustrations, logos, anime, and lightly-blurred photos. It cannot reinvent detail that compression destroyed: heavily compressed JPEGs keep their blocky artifacts, faces can turn waxy, and unreadable text stays unreadable. If your source is already sharp, doubling its size adds little real detail you couldn't get from a plain resize.
Big inputs and weak GPUs
2x output can hit tens of megapixels, which strains browser memory and can be slow or fail on phones with weak GPUs. Feeding an already-large, already-sharp photo gains little visible sharpness for the cost. For very large prints or batch jobs, a desktop tool like Real-ESRGAN or Topaz handles the load far better than a browser tab.
Getting a usable result
Use the cleanest source you have; upscaling an artifact-laden JPEG just sharpens the artifacts. If you only need it bigger on screen, CSS scaling or a plain resize is free and instant. For print, DPI is just metadata: the real benefit is doubled pixel dimensions, letting you print larger at the same DPI, not magic sharpness from a 72 DPI web image.
